Mercury Retrograde 2027: Dates, Degrees and Shadow Periods
Mercury retrograde 2027 dates: February 9 to March 3, June 10 to July 4, October 7 to October 28, with exact degrees, shadow periods and calm, practical advice.
Mercury turns retrograde three times in 2027. Each period lasts about three weeks, and each one is a good moment to slow down, check details and finish what is already in motion. None of them is a reason to panic.
Here are the dates, the exact degrees, the signs involved, the "shadow" periods before and after, and a practical way to work with each one.
Mercury retrograde 2027 at a glance
- First retrograde: February 9 to March 3, from 5°58′ Pisces back to 20°55′ Aquarius.
- Second retrograde: June 10 to July 4, from 6°21′ Cancer back to 27°28′ Gemini.
- Third retrograde: October 7 to October 28, from 4°55′ Scorpio back to 19°18′ Libra.
These dates come from calculated positions in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Depending on your time zone, a station can fall one calendar day earlier or later on your local calendar. Degrees are given in the tropical zodiac.
What Mercury retrograde actually is
A planet is retrograde when, seen from Earth, it seems to move backward through the zodiac for a while. Mercury does not really reverse. It is an optical effect: Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth does, and for about three weeks at a time its path, viewed from here, appears to loop backward.
The moments when Mercury seems to stand still before changing direction are called stations. "Stations retrograde" means it starts moving backward; "stations direct" means it starts moving forward again. Near the middle of each retrograde, Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun, which traditional astrologers associate with a planet being reborn after disappearing into the Sun's light. If that idea interests you, see combustion, under the beams and cazimi.
Mercury rules communication, thinking, learning, paperwork, trade, short trips and messages. When it retraces its steps, astrologers read the period as a natural time to review those things. The useful words all start with "re": revise, reread, reconnect, repair, reconsider.
The shadow periods, explained simply
Every retrograde covers a stretch of the zodiac twice in reverse, and then a third time going forward. That stretch is the shadow zone.
- The pre-shadow begins when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct. From then on, it is moving through ground it will soon revisit. Topics that come up now often return during the retrograde.
- The post-shadow ends when Mercury moves forward past the degree where it first turned retrograde. Only then has it fully left the zone. Matters revised during the retrograde usually settle in this phase.
For 2027, the shadow zones and their approximate timing are:
- First retrograde: the shadow zone runs from 20°55′ Aquarius to 5°58′ Pisces. Mercury enters Aquarius on January 13 and reaches the start of the zone in late January. After turning direct on March 3, it returns to Pisces on March 18 and clears 5°58′ Pisces in late March.
- Second retrograde: the zone runs from 27°28′ Gemini to 6°21′ Cancer. Mercury enters Gemini on May 9 and reaches the start of the zone in late May, a few days before entering Cancer on May 28. After turning direct on July 4, it returns to Cancer on July 12 and clears 6°21′ Cancer in the second half of July.
- Third retrograde: the zone runs from 19°18′ Libra to 4°55′ Scorpio. Mercury enters Libra on September 3 and reaches the start of the zone in mid-September. After turning direct on October 28, it returns to Scorpio on November 10 and clears 4°55′ Scorpio in mid-November.
The shadow phases are softer than the retrograde itself. Think of them as the warm-up and the cool-down.
A pattern in 2027: water into air
All three retrogrades of 2027 follow the same shape. Each begins in a water sign (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio) and backs into the air sign just before it (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra).
Water signs are associated with feeling, memory and intuition. Air signs are associated with ideas, words and connection. So the year has a repeating theme: impressions and emotions get revisited through conversation and reasoning. Something you sensed becomes something you can explain.
First retrograde: February 9 to March 3 (Pisces and Aquarius)
Mercury stations retrograde on February 9 at 5°58′ Pisces, moves back into Aquarius on February 18, and turns direct on March 3 at 20°55′ Aquarius.
In traditional astrology Mercury is in both its detriment and its fall in Pisces, meaning the sign does not suit its precise, sorting nature. Pisces thinks in images and impressions rather than lists. So the start of this retrograde can make details slippery: double-check dates, amounts and attachments. Once Mercury backs into Aquarius, the review turns toward groups, networks and shared plans.

This retrograde happens entirely inside the Mars retrograde of January 10 to April 1, which makes the whole first quarter of 2027 a strong review period for both words and actions. It also overlaps the penumbral lunar eclipse of February 20 at 1°58′ Virgo, a subtle eclipse that can bring a small piece of unfinished business to the surface. The annular solar eclipse of February 6 at 17°37′ Aquarius falls just before the station, inside the pre-shadow zone. One curious detail: Mercury turns direct at 20°55′ Aquarius, the exact opposite degree of the spot where Mars will turn direct in Leo four weeks later, on April 1. More on that in Mars retrograde 2027 in Virgo and Leo.
Good for: revising group projects, reconnecting with old friends or communities, reviewing subscriptions and shared accounts, finishing creative or spiritual work you set aside.
Second retrograde: June 10 to July 4 (Cancer and Gemini)
Mercury stations retrograde on June 10 at 6°21′ Cancer, moves back into Gemini on June 26, and turns direct on July 4 at 27°28′ Gemini. That last date is also the day of the New Moon at 11°57′ Cancer (UTC), so the end of the retrograde and a fresh lunar cycle arrive together.
Cancer is ruled by the Moon and concerns home, family, memory and belonging. Gemini is one of Mercury's own signs, where it works comfortably. This retrograde often begins with family conversations, home paperwork or old memories, and ends with clearer thinking as Mercury returns to familiar ground in Gemini. The June solstice, when the Sun enters Cancer on June 21, falls in the middle of it.
Good for: home repairs and household admin, family conversations that need a second try, sorting old photos or records, rereading notes before a summer decision. If you are curious about how a Cancer retrograde played out recently, see Mercury retrograde in Cancer 2026.
Third retrograde: October 7 to October 28 (Scorpio and Libra)
Mercury stations retrograde on October 7 at 4°55′ Scorpio, moves back into Libra on October 16, and turns direct on October 28 at 19°18′ Libra.
Scorpio is ruled by Mars and concerns depth, trust, shared resources and what is kept private. Libra is ruled by Venus and concerns balance, agreements and partnership. This retrograde tends to bring up questions of trust and fairness: what was left unsaid, which agreement needs better terms, which shared arrangement needs a second look. Pluto turns direct on October 18 at 4°44′ Aquarius in the middle of this period, adding weight to anything that involves power or long-standing patterns.
Good for: reviewing contracts and shared finances, clearing up a misunderstanding with a partner or colleague, reworking a negotiation, finishing research.
Practical, non-fearful guidance
Mercury retrograde has a reputation for chaos. In practice, the people who do well with it simply plan for a little more checking.
- Back up and double-check. Save files, confirm appointments, reread messages before sending.
- Leave buffer time. Travel and deliveries can run late, so give yourself room.
- Finish before you start. Retrogrades favor completing, editing and repairing over launching from zero.
- Reconnect on purpose. People from the past often reappear. Decide calmly whether to pick up the thread.
- Sign when you are ready, not when you are rushed. Life does not stop for three weeks, and you do not need to freeze every decision. Read the fine print, ask your questions, and sign once the terms are clear.
Nothing about Mercury retrograde guarantees a problem. It describes a rhythm, a good time to look back so the next step forward is cleaner.

Mercury retrograde in your personal year
General dates are a starting point. Whether a retrograde is a minor footnote or a major theme for you depends on your chart: where Mercury sits at birth, which houses it rules, and whether Mercury is the planet leading your year. Traditional astrologers find that leading planet with annual profections. If Mercury is your lord of the year, all three retrogrades deserve extra attention.
The 2027 Year Ahead Guide works this out from your own birth chart: a personal guide of more than 50 pages with your transits, progressions and solar arc directions month by month, and your key dates, including where each Mercury retrograde falls for you. The positions are calculated exactly, and the text is written from those calculations.
