Venus and Mars in Synastry: Attraction, Affection and Desire
Venus and Mars in synastry, explained in plain English: what each contact describes, from conjunction to opposition, plus Venus-Venus and Mars-Mars links.
When people look at two birth charts together, Venus and Mars are usually the first planets they check. That makes sense. Between them, these two planets describe a great deal of what draws people together: affection, pleasure, desire, pursuit and the spark that makes someone hard to ignore.
But Venus and Mars contacts are often explained in a rushed way, as if one aspect could tell you everything about attraction. This guide slows down. It explains what each planet means, what the main contacts between them describe, how Venus-Venus and Mars-Mars links work, and why the sign and condition of each planet change the story.
If you are new to comparing charts, start with our step-by-step guide on how to read a synastry chart. Synastry simply means comparing two natal charts to see how they meet.
What Venus and Mars Describe
Venus: Affection, Pleasure and Value
Venus describes what someone finds beautiful, what feels pleasurable and what they value. In relationships, Venus shows how a person gives and receives affection, what kind of closeness feels sweet to them and what makes them feel appreciated.
Traditional astrologers called Venus a benefic, a planet that tends to bring ease, harmony and enjoyment. Venus is also about more than romance. It describes friendship, art, taste and even money. Our article Venus is not just love explores this wider meaning.
Mars: Desire, Drive and Pursuit
Mars describes desire, energy, courage and the will to act. In relationships, Mars shows how someone pursues what they want, how they express physical desire and how they handle anger and conflict.
Traditional astrologers called Mars a malefic, which sounds harsher than it is. It means Mars cuts, separates and heats things up. Without Mars, nothing starts. With too much unmanaged Mars, things burn. In attraction, Mars is the part that reaches toward someone.
Why the Pair Matters
Venus draws in. Mars goes out. Venus describes the pull of attraction and Mars describes the push of pursuit. When one person's Venus and the other person's Mars make contact, these two motions meet. That is why Venus-Mars aspects are such classic signatures of attraction in synastry.
These planets are not tied to gender. Anyone can have a strong Venus or a strong Mars, and in any couple either person can play either role. What matters is which planets touch, not who is who.
The Main Venus-Mars Contacts
An aspect is an angle between two points. In synastry, we measure the angle between one person's Venus and the other person's Mars. Many astrologers use an orb (allowed distance from exact) of about 5 or 6 degrees for these contacts. The closer to exact, the stronger the contact tends to feel. For a refresher on aspects, see aspects in astrology.
Conjunction (0 degrees)
When one person's Venus sits on the other person's Mars, attraction is often immediate and hard to miss. Affection and desire blend. The Venus person may feel actively wanted. The Mars person may feel drawn toward the Venus person's warmth, style or ease.
This is one of the strongest attraction contacts in synastry. It can also be intense. Mars brings heat, and if the Mars person is impatient or the Venus person feels pressured, sweetness can turn to irritation. Good pacing helps.
Sextile (60 degrees)
The sextile links signs of compatible elements, such as fire with air or earth with water. A Venus-Mars sextile tends to feel friendly, playful and easy. There is attraction, but it is lighter and often mixed with real liking.
Sextiles are opportunities. They work best when both people act on them, by flirting, planning time together, or making small gestures that keep the spark going.
Square (90 degrees)
The square links signs that share a pace but differ in element. A Venus-Mars square often describes strong attraction with friction built in. The two people may want each other a lot while having different ideas of timing, romance or what a good evening looks like.
Squares can feel exciting, like a chase that never quite settles. They can also produce bickering. Many couples with this contact find that the tension keeps things alive, as long as both can laugh at their differences and talk about what each person needs.
Trine (120 degrees)
The trine links signs of the same element. A Venus-Mars trine tends to feel natural and well matched. Desire and affection flow easily, and both people often find it simple to please each other.
The trine's gift is ease. Its only risk is that ease can be taken for granted. Trines describe a good fit, but they do not do the work of attention and care on their own.

Opposition (180 degrees)
The opposition links signs across the zodiac from each other. A Venus-Mars opposition often feels magnetic. Each person sees in the other something they do not have, and that difference is part of the pull.
Oppositions describe strong awareness of the other person, with a natural back-and-forth. There can be push and pull, especially around who leads and who receives. When both people value the contrast instead of trying to erase it, the opposition can feel like a good partnership of opposites.
Both Directions Count
Always check both directions. Your Venus to their Mars is one contact. Your Mars to their Venus is another. When both appear, attraction tends to feel mutual and balanced. When only one appears, one person may feel the pull more strongly, or in a different way, than the other.
Venus-Venus Contacts
When one person's Venus makes an aspect to the other person's Venus, the theme is shared taste and similar ways of showing care.
- Conjunction or trine: Often a strong sense of liking the same things. Shared aesthetics, similar ideas of fun, and an easy agreement about what feels loving.
- Sextile: Friendly overlap in taste, with room for each person to introduce the other to something new.
- Square: Different love languages. One person may show affection through words, the other through practical help. Neither is wrong, but each may need to learn the other's way.
- Opposition: Complementary tastes. Each person may balance or broaden what the other enjoys.
Venus-Venus contacts are often found in close friendships as well as romantic partnerships. They describe the comfort of being with someone who enjoys life in a similar way.
Mars-Mars Contacts
When one person's Mars aspects the other person's Mars, the theme is energy, drive and conflict style.
- Conjunction: Similar pace and drive. Great for working toward shared goals. In disagreements, both may push at once, so heat can rise quickly.
- Trine or sextile: Energies cooperate. These pairs often work, train or build things well together and handle conflict with less drama.
- Square: Different approaches to action and anger. One may want to act now, the other later. This can be motivating or frustrating.
- Opposition: Strong energy across the relationship, sometimes felt as competition. Clear agreements about how to disagree can make this a productive contact.
Mars-Mars contacts are worth paying attention to because conflict style matters in any long relationship. Two people do not need the same Mars. They need to understand each other's.
Sign and Condition Matter
An aspect between Venus and Mars is only half the story. The other half is what kind of Venus and what kind of Mars are involved. Traditional astrology describes this as a planet's condition.
Sign
A Venus in Taurus expresses affection through steadiness and comfort. A Venus in Aquarius may express it through friendship and freedom. A Mars in Leo pursues warmly and openly. A Mars in Capricorn pursues patiently, with long-term goals in mind.
So a Venus-Mars trine between Venus in Taurus and Mars in Capricorn describes slow, reliable attraction, while a trine between Venus in Aries and Mars in Sagittarius describes quick, adventurous chemistry. Both are trines. They feel different.
Essential Dignity
Traditional astrology also asks whether a planet is in a sign where it works easily. This is called essential dignity.
- Venus is strongest in Taurus and Libra, the signs it rules, and exalted in Pisces. It is in detriment in Aries and Scorpio and in fall in Virgo.
- Mars is strongest in Aries and Scorpio, the signs it rules, and exalted in Capricorn. It is in detriment in Taurus and Libra and in fall in Cancer.
A planet in detriment or fall is not "bad." It simply works in a less straightforward way. A Venus in Scorpio may love with great depth but also with guardedness. A Mars in Libra may want peace so much that anger comes out sideways. Knowing this helps explain why a contact that looks easy on paper may feel complicated in practice, and why a "hard" contact may work better than expected.
Sect and Other Factors
Sect, whether a chart is a day or night chart, also affects how Venus and Mars behave. Mars tends to act more gently in a night chart and more sharply in a day chart. Our guide to sect in astrology explains why.
Some astrologers also note when two charts exchange signs, for example when one person's Venus sits in Aries (a Mars sign) and the other person's Mars sits in Libra (a Venus sign). This mirrors the idea of mutual reception and can add a sense of mutual welcome.
Practical Notes
- One contact is not a relationship. A strong Venus-Mars aspect describes attraction. It does not describe trust, shared values or long-term fit. Look at the Moon, Saturn and each person's 7th house as well. Our guide to birth chart compatibility covers these.
- No contact is not a problem. Many warm relationships have no tight Venus-Mars aspect at all. Attraction can come through the Moon, the Sun, the Ascendant or many other links.
- Hard aspects are not warnings. Squares and oppositions often bring energy and lasting interest. They describe where both people may need patience.
- Unknown birth times still work here. Venus and Mars move slowly enough that their positions are usually clear even without an exact birth time. The houses they fall in, however, need a known time.
- Use it for understanding. The most useful question is not "are we compatible?" but "how does each of us show affection and desire, and how can we meet each other well?"
