Someone with Mercury in Virgo may think in careful steps and catch the one detail everyone else missed. Someone with Mercury in Leo may explain things with color and conviction, and remember ideas best when they can tell them as a story. Mercury in Aquarius might be the friend who questions every rule in the group chat, not to be difficult, but because it genuinely wants to know why things are done that way.
Why Mercury stays close to your Sun
Seen from Earth, Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun. In practice that means your Mercury is always in the same sign as your Sun or in one of the two signs right next to it. A Scorpio Sun, for example, will have Mercury in Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius.
Mercury's pace is uneven. About three times a year it turns retrograde, meaning it appears to move backward from our point of view. So it might cross a sign in two weeks or linger there for two months. If Mercury changed signs on your birthday, your birth time settles which one it was in.
Mercury's house
The house shows where your thinking tends to focus and where conversations shape your life most. With whole-sign houses, which this site uses, your Rising sign is the 1st house and the rest follow in order, so you need a birth time to know it.
Mercury in the 3rd house often points to a mind kept busy by neighbors, siblings, errands and messages. Mercury in the 12th may think best alone and in quiet, away from the noise, and sometimes keeps its best ideas private until they are ready.
Mercury's strength by sign
Mercury rules two signs, Gemini and Virgo, and is exalted, meaning especially well placed, in Virgo. It has a harder time in Sagittarius and Pisces, the opposite signs, where the mind prefers the big picture or intuition over fine detail.
That is not a judgment on intelligence. A Pisces Mercury may grasp the mood of a conversation long before it can list the facts, and a Sagittarius Mercury may see where an argument is heading while others are still checking the first step.
