Moon Sign Calculator

The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a half days, so your Moon sign is far more personal than your Sun sign. It describes your emotional needs and what helps you feel at home.

What your Moon sign says about you

Your Moon sign describes your inner weather: what you need to feel safe, how you react before you have time to think, and what comforts you after a hard day. If the Sun is what you aim for, the Moon is what you come home to.

A Cancer Moon may need a familiar place and familiar faces to unwind. A Sagittarius Moon may feel cramped by too much routine and settle best after a long walk, a trip or a big conversation about something that matters. Neither need is better than the other; they simply ask for different kinds of care.

Why the Moon sometimes needs your birth time

The Moon is the fastest body in the chart. It moves through a whole sign in about two and a half days, so it changes signs every two or three days all year long.

On many birthdays the Moon stays in one sign from midnight to midnight, and the date is enough. On others it crosses into the next sign partway through the day, and then your birth time decides which sign is yours. If you do not know your time and the Moon changed signs that day, read about both signs. Most people recognize themselves in one of them fairly quickly.

The house your Moon lives in

The house your Moon falls in shows the part of life where you look for emotional security. This site uses whole-sign houses, which start from your Rising sign, so you will need your birth time to see it.

A Moon in the 2nd house often finds calm in having enough: savings, good food, things that last. A Moon in the 9th house may feel most settled when life has room for learning, travel or a set of beliefs to lean on. The house turns a general mood into something you can recognize in your own week.

Moon sign versus Sun sign

Many people feel their Sun sign description fits only half the time. Often the missing half is the Moon. The Sun shows what you want to become; the Moon shows what you need along the way. An Aries Sun with a Taurus Moon may charge ahead in public and still need slow mornings and physical comfort in private.

In traditional astrology the Moon is at home in Cancer, the sign it rules, and exalted, or especially well supported, in Taurus. It works harder in Capricorn and Scorpio, where feelings tend to be held in or felt very deeply. That describes a style of feeling, not a limit on how happy or loved you can be.

Where to go from here

Your Moon is easiest to understand next to your Sun and Rising sign, since together they describe what you want, what you need and how you show up. The free birth chart reading on this site puts those three side by side and reads them as one story.

Questions

Why is my Moon sign different from one I was given years ago?

The Moon moves fast, so a missing or rounded birth time can place it in the wrong sign. Check that the date, time and city you entered match your birth record.

Can my Moon sign change during my life?

No. Your birth Moon stays where it was when you were born. What changes is how well you understand its needs and how you look after them.

Is the Moon sign more accurate than the Sun sign?

It is not more accurate, but it often feels more personal, because far fewer people share both your Sun sign and your Moon sign.

What if I have no idea what time I was born?

Enter the date and city anyway. If the Moon stayed in one sign all day, your answer is certain. If it changed signs, you will see two options, and the house will stay unknown until you find a time.
