The 7th House in Astrology: Partnership, Marriage and Encounter
The 7th house rules marriage, partners, open rivals and every face-to-face bond. Learn its traditional meaning, each planet there and how to read your own.
Some people enter your life and stand directly in front of you. A spouse. A business partner. A client who changes your direction. Even a rival who forces you to grow. These are not people you observe from a distance. You meet them face to face.
In astrology, those encounters belong to the 7th house. It sits exactly opposite the rising sign, and it describes the people who stand across the table from you.

What the 7th House Governs
The traditional significations of the 7th house include:
- Marriage and the spouse: the committed partner, and the bond itself
- Partners of every kind: business partners, collaborators and anyone joined to you by agreement
- Contracts and agreements between two parties
- Open enemies: rivals and opponents you know about, as distinct from the hidden enemies of the 12th house
- The other side in a dispute: in William Lilly's horary practice, the opponent in a lawsuit, and even a thief or a runaway being sought
- The hips and lower back, in the old body scheme
The Hellenistic astrologers called the 7th house the Setting place (in Greek, dysis), because it is where the Sun and planets sink below the western horizon. The degree setting at birth is called the Descendant. Some ancient authors also linked the 7th with later life and old age, matching the image of the setting Sun.
The House of the Other
The 1st house is you. The 7th house is the other person. Because they sit on the same line across the chart, astrologers often read them together: what you bring, and what you meet.
This is why the 7th house includes enemies as well as spouses. Both are people who meet you directly and on equal footing. A good partner and a worthy rival have something in common: neither can be ignored.
Modern Layers
Modern astrology describes the 7th house as the mirror of the self. It shows what you seek in others, what you project onto partners, and what relationships ask you to develop. Counseling, consulting and any one-to-one service are often placed here too.
The idea of projection is useful. Qualities we have not yet owned often appear first in the people we are drawn to. A shy person may keep meeting bold partners, and through them learn boldness. Just remember that the traditional core is concrete: actual partners, actual contracts, actual rivals.
Where the 7th House Sits in the Chart
The 7th is one of the four angular houses, along with the 1st, 4th and 10th. Angular houses sit on the main axes of the chart, and planets there act strongly and visibly. Our article on angular houses explains this in more detail.
The 7th forms an opposition to the rising sign, a 180-degree aspect. Opposition is a strong, direct line of sight, which fits a house about people who face you. In Lilly's table of accidental strength, a planet in the 7th earns one of the higher bonuses.
No planet has its joy in the 7th.
How to Read Your 7th House
- Find the sign of the 7th house. It is always the sign opposite your rising sign. Aries rising gives a Libra 7th. Capricorn rising gives a Cancer 7th. The sign describes the qualities you meet in partners and the style of your one-to-one bonds.
- Find its ruler. With traditional rulers: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, the Moon rules Cancer, the Sun rules Leo, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius.
- See where the ruler lives. A 7th ruler in the 10th may bring partners through work, or a partner with a public role. In the 9th, partners may come from far away or through study. In the 1st, a partner may feel like part of your identity.

The Sun here means you often discover yourself through partnership. You may be drawn to strong, confident people, or find that a partner's life shapes your own. The lesson is to stay visible to yourself while being devoted to someone else.

The Moon here makes partnership emotionally central. You may need a close, responsive bond and feel unsettled without one. Partners may be nurturing, or may need nurturing. Feelings in relationships can change with the tides, so honest conversation helps.
Mercury in the 7th House
Mercury here wants a partner who is also a conversation partner. Shared ideas, wit and communication hold the bond together. You may work well in negotiation, consulting or contracts. The challenge is listening as well as talking.
Venus in the 7th House
Venus here brings grace and attraction to relationships. Partnership may come more easily, and you may be skilled at keeping the peace. Traditional authors saw Venus here as a helpful sign for marriage. When Venus is under strain, the risk is avoiding conflict that needs to happen.
Mars in the 7th House
Mars here brings passion and directness to partnership, along with the possibility of conflict. You may be drawn to bold or fiery partners, or meet rivals head on. Older authors linked it with quarrels in marriage. The healthier reading is that relationships ask for honest, active engagement, and that strong partners need fair fights rather than silent ones.
Jupiter in the 7th House
Jupiter here traditionally brings protection and benefit through others: a generous partner, helpful collaborators or fair dealings with opponents. You may see the best in people. The risk is trusting too quickly or expecting a partner to solve everything.
Saturn in the 7th House
Saturn here takes partnership seriously. Commitment may come later, after careful thought, or with someone older or more established. Relationships can feel like work, and fears around rejection may need gentle attention. Saturn also gives loyalty and staying power. Many lasting marriages carry this placement. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto
As secondary modern factors, Uranus may bring a need for freedom within partnership, Neptune idealism or confusion about partners, and Pluto intense, transforming bonds.
An Empty 7th House
An empty 7th house does not mean you will never marry or never find a partner. Many happily married people have no planets in the 7th.
When the house is empty, its ruler tells the story. Study the ruler's sign, house, aspects and condition. You will often learn more about your relationships from that one planet than from a crowded 7th house.
When the 7th House Becomes Active
Traditional astrology uses annual profections to highlight one house for each year of life, moving forward one house at every birthday. The 7th house takes its turn in the years that begin at ages 6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66 and 78.
In those years, partnership often takes center stage. People meet partners, marry, sign important contracts, start business collaborations, or face a rival directly. Relationships that have been drifting may ask for a decision. A 7th house year does not guarantee a wedding, but it often brings the question of partnership into focus.

Turning the Chart From the 7th
Traditional astrologers learned a lot about a partner by treating the 7th house as a new 1st house. Counted from the 7th, your 8th house becomes the partner's money (their 2nd), and your 10th house becomes the partner's home and family (their 4th). This is called "turning" the chart. It is a helpful way to think about how a partner's life connects with yours, but it describes the relationship from your side, not the other person's own chart.
A Worked Example
The chart below is fictional and exists only to teach the method.
Imagine someone we will call Lena, born during the day with Capricorn rising. Cancer is her 7th house, so the Moon rules it. The Moon sits in Taurus, its exaltation, in her 5th house. Mars sits in Cancer inside her 7th.
- Cancer on the 7th suggests she is drawn to caring, protective, emotionally open partners, a contrast to her own reserved Capricorn manner.
- The Moon exalted in the 5th links partnership with pleasure, romance and creativity. Lena may meet partners through enjoyable activities, and her relationships can feel warm and steady.
- Mars in Cancer is in its fall, a sign where it struggles to act directly. In a day chart, Mars is out of sect, which can make its expression harsher. Conflict in her relationships may come out sideways, through moods or silence.
- Saturn rules her rising sign and the Moon rules her 7th, so her chart ruler and her partnership ruler govern opposite signs, one cool and guarded, the other soft and responsive. Learning to balance self-protection with openness may be a lifelong theme.
Together, this describes a person who longs for warmth, finds it through shared joy, and does best when tension is named early instead of left to simmer.
Common Myths About the 7th House
"An empty 7th house means no marriage." Emptiness says nothing about whether you marry. The 7th ruler carries the story.
"Saturn in the 7th means divorce." Saturn often means seriousness, timing and endurance in relationships.
"The 7th house is only romance." It also covers business partners, clients, contracts and open rivals.
"Your 7th house sign is your soulmate's Sun sign." It describes qualities you meet in others, not a partner's birthday.
