The 6th House in Astrology: Work, Health, Routine and Service

The 6th house covers daily work, health habits, service, pets and ordinary struggles. Learn its traditional meaning, the planets there and how to read it.

Not every part of life is glamorous. There are dishes to wash, bodies to care for, jobs to show up to, and small problems to solve again and again. Most of a life is lived in these ordinary hours.

In astrology, those hours belong to the 6th house. It describes daily work, the body's maintenance, the people and animals who depend on us, and the routine struggles that wear us down or make us stronger.

This guide explains what the 6th house meant to traditional astrologers, what modern astrology adds, how each planet behaves there, and how to read your own 6th house with care and without fear.

What the 6th House Governs

The traditional significations of the 6th house include:

  • Illness and injury: the old astrologers looked here for the body's weak points and periods of sickness
  • Servants and employees: people who work for you, or work you do under someone else's direction
  • Small animals: in the old texts, sheep, goats and pigs; today, pets and small domestic animals
  • Daily labor and toil: work that is necessary rather than chosen for pleasure
  • Tenants and farm workers, in William Lilly's list
  • The lower belly and intestines, in the old body scheme

Lilly also gave the 6th to uncles and aunts on the father's side. That comes from "turning" the chart: the 6th is the 3rd house (siblings) counted from the 4th house (the father).

Bad Fortune

The Hellenistic astrologers called the 6th house Bad Fortune (in Greek, Kakē Tychē). It sits opposite the 12th house, called the Bad Spirit. These names sound harsh to modern ears, but they describe a type of experience, not a life sentence.

The 6th is a place where effort is required. Things rarely arrive for free here. That makes it the house of ordinary difficulty: tiredness, illness, overwork, and the kind of service that goes unthanked. It is also the house where we build resilience, skill and the habits that hold a life together.

Mars's Joy

Mars has its joy in the 6th house. The ancient pattern places the two malefic planets, Mars and Saturn, in the two difficult cadent houses: Mars in the 6th, Saturn in the 12th. Mars rules effort, struggle, cutting and heat. In a house of toil and illness, Mars has a job to do: fighting, working, repairing. The joy does not make illness pleasant. It means Mars's energy fits the house. Read more in our article on planetary joys.

Modern Layers

Modern astrology turns the 6th house toward work routines, health habits, diet, exercise, service to others, the workplace and pets. It is often called the house of "self-improvement."

These meanings grow out of the tradition. A house of illness becomes a house of health care. A house of servants becomes a house of service. Use the modern layer for practical self-care, but remember that a birth chart cannot diagnose illness. Health concerns always belong with a medical professional.

Where the 6th House Sits in the Chart

The 6th house is cadent, one of the four houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) that fall away from the angles. Planets here act more quietly and less publicly than planets in the angular houses.

The 6th is also in aversion to the rising sign: it cannot see the 1st house by any traditional aspect. The old authors saw this as part of its difficulty. What happens in the 6th can feel disconnected from what you want, as if it happens to you rather than through you. In Lilly's table of accidental strength, a planet in the 6th loses points.

How to Read Your 6th House

  • Find the sign of the 6th house. Count six signs from your rising sign, starting with the rising sign as one. Pisces rising gives a Leo 6th. Leo rising gives a Capricorn 6th. The sign describes your working style and how your body handles strain.
  • Find its ruler. With traditional rulers: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, the Moon rules Cancer, the Sun rules Leo, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius.
  • See where the ruler lives. A 6th ruler in the 10th connects daily labor with career. In the 2nd, work and income are closely linked. In the 1st, routines and health habits shape your sense of self.
  • Judge the ruler's condition. Its sign, aspects and sect matter. A strong ruler can mean robust habits and good working conditions.
  • Look at planets inside and aspects to the house. Planets in the 6th show where effort, service and maintenance take up energy.

Planets in the 6th House

Sun in the 6th House

The Sun here ties identity to useful work. You may feel most yourself when you are being helpful, skilled or productive. Vitality can depend on balanced routines. The lesson is to value yourself apart from what you produce.

Moon in the 6th House

The Moon here connects mood and body closely. Routines may be emotionally important, and stress may show up physically. Caring for others, including animals, can come naturally. Gentle, regular habits often help this placement more than strict regimes.

Mercury in the 6th House

Mercury here brings the mind to practical tasks. You may be skilled at technical work, problem solving, organizing or detailed craft. Worry about small things is a common shadow. Writing lists and finishing one task at a time can calm a busy Mercury.

Venus in the 6th House

Venus here softens daily work. You may enjoy a pleasant workplace, get along well with coworkers, or work in beauty, care, design or hospitality. Venus in the 6th asks for balance: work you enjoy, and enjoyment that does not crowd out necessary tasks.

Mars in the 6th House

This is Mars's joy, and here Mars often channels its energy into hard work. You may be tireless, physically active and good in a crisis. The old authors also linked this placement with fevers, inflammation or cuts. That points to a need for rest and recovery, not a prediction of illness. Well directed, Mars in the 6th is the energy of someone who gets things done.

Jupiter in the 6th House

Jupiter here often brings help with work and health: good colleagues, a supportive workplace, or a resilient body. You may be generous in service. Since Jupiter is a benefic in a difficult house, its help can be real but limited, and the shadow is taking on too much.

Saturn in the 6th House

Saturn here can bring heavy workloads, chronic aches or a feeling of being stuck in routine. It also builds discipline, steady habits and mastery of a trade over time. Many people with this placement become the person everyone relies on. Self-care is not optional for them. Our guide to Saturn in the houses offers more detail.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto

As secondary modern factors, Uranus may bring irregular routines or unusual work, Neptune a sensitive constitution or service-minded idealism, and Pluto an intense, transformative relationship with work and health.

An Empty 6th House

An empty 6th house does not mean you never get sick or never work. It simply means the house's ruler carries its story.

Look at where the 6th ruler sits and how it is doing. That planet will describe your daily work, your relationship with health and your role in service.

When the 6th House Becomes Active

In the traditional timing method called annual profections, each year of life highlights one house, moving forward one house at every birthday. The 6th house takes its turn in the years that begin at ages 5, 17, 29, 41, 53, 65 and 77.

A 6th house year often brings practical matters forward: a new job or a heavier workload, a change of routine, a closer look at health habits, caring for someone, or adopting a pet. Some people feel these years as tiring. Many also find that they are excellent years for building habits that last.

The ruler of your 6th house becomes the "lord of the year." Its condition in your birth chart shows how smoothly those twelve months of work and maintenance tend to go. Our guide to annual profections explains the method.

Care, Not Diagnosis

Because the 6th house deals with illness, it is easy to read it with anxiety. Traditional astrologers did study it for health, but they also knew its limits, and modern readers should too. Treat what the 6th house shows as an invitation to pay attention: to rest when Mars runs hot, to keep routines gentle when the Moon is sensitive, to build steady habits when Saturn is heavy. Real symptoms deserve real medical care.

A Worked Example

This chart is fictional and used only to show the method.

Imagine someone we will call Rosa, born at night with Pisces rising. Leo is her 6th house, so the Sun rules it. The Sun sits in Aries, its exaltation, in her 2nd house. Mars sits in Leo inside her 6th.

  • Leo on the 6th suggests a proud, wholehearted approach to work. Rosa may want to be recognized for what she does each day.
  • The Sun exalted in the 2nd links daily work strongly with income. She may earn well through steady effort.
  • Mars in the 6th is in its joy and, since Rosa was born at night, in its own sect. Mars is the nocturnal malefic, so a night birth tends to make it more constructive. Expect energy for hard work and perhaps a strong need for physical activity.
  • Mars also rules Aries, where her Sun sits. The planet of effort governs the sign holding her 6th ruler, tying work, energy and money tightly together.

Together, this sketches a hard worker whose income grows from daily effort, and who stays healthy by moving her body.

Common Myths About the 6th House

"A planet in the 6th means you will get sick." It describes how you relate to health and work, not a diagnosis.

"Bad Fortune means a bad life." The name describes effort and maintenance. Effort builds skill and resilience.

"The 6th house is your career." Career belongs mainly to the 10th house. The 6th is daily labor and routine.

"The 6th is Virgo's house." Modern shorthand aside, your 6th house is the sign that actually falls there in your chart.
